The month of December is potentially the most difficult month of homeschooling. Even though we’re on fumes from homeschooling, we still must finish strong so that we will have a fresh start and a clean slate for the new year. Although we’re tired and clawing our way to a much needed break, spicing up our homeschool with Christmas-themed activities have really helped us to make the most of our days leading up to Christmas.

Make Learning Fun

Each homeschool day provides an opportunity to incorporate fun, hands-on, Christmas-themed activities. The wonderful thing about Christmas is that there are so many great ideas and free material available–especially on Pinterest. You just need to purchase the materials and write a list of what you want to do.

Incorporating Advent Into Your Homeschool

December is the month of Advent–a time when Christians reflect on the significance of Jesus coming to earth as a human and anticipation of when he returns. Advent is the perfect time to incorporate activities that encourage children to think about the deeper meanings surrounding Christmas.  In our homeschool, we have an advent calendar with chocolate. I read Advent- Scriptures to my younger children each day and they do Scripture copywork. My older children complete a digital journal each day where they read a Scripture and respond to a daily writing prompt. Click on the pictures below to download a free copy!

Incorporate Community Service Projects

The holiday season is a great time to take a break from the textbooks and get out into the community to serve. The life lessons your kids will learn will extend far beyond academics.  Community service provides your kids with a view of how their skills, talents, and education can be used to serve others. It can also teach them humility, compassion, and gratitude for what they have. In a society that places priority on material wealth and holiday consumerism, your kids can learn that the most important things are intangible.

Make the Most of the Christmas Holidays

The Christmas season is a time for making memories, enjoying family, and reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas–celebrating the birth and coming triumphant return of our Savior. There are many wonderful ways to let the joy of Christmas reenergize your homeschool and create lasting memories.
